Happy New Year

Hope you've all had a lovely Christmas with lots of lovely knitterly presents! Amongst my presents were the lovely Heartfelt book by Kim Hargreaves and a hank of Qiviut - need I say more? I haven't decided exactly what to make with it to do it justice.

We spent Christmas with Kate in London - the first time for more than thirty years that we've not been at home with all the family here but in view of my dreadful November and early December health issues this was a wonderful solution. And in fact I wouldn't have coped with the whole family this year because on Christmas Eve I started having more problems in my just-repaired left eye. By the day after Boxing Day I decided I needed it to be seen by an expert and that it couldn't wait until my next appointment on 4 Jan with my consultant so that morning was spent at Kingston Eye Casualty. I was temporarily reassured that there was no retinal detachment but over the weekend back at home things were quite obviously getting quickly worse and I was lucky yesterday to be able to see the retinal surgeon and also have my retina reattached.

He was very surprised it hadn't been picked up by the consultant on Thursdaybecause by yesterday it was quite advanced and I was very lucky that he'd had a cancellation so I could be operated on that afternoon. Less lucky was that as I'd had eaten recently the hour long procedure had to be done under a local anaesthetic. Scary.

I've got a sort of gas filled balloon in my eye now which is supposed to hold the retina in place; this will slowly go (?) over the next two weeks and hopefully everything will be fine. Fingers crossed. I'm told that over the next few weeks a cataract is a very common side effect of this procedure but that can be dealt with when and if. It's all very scary because this hopefully reattached retina can still re-detach and he said the other eye is likely to have the same in the near future.

One step at a time.

And how true - you so take for granted good health and functioning bodies.

A very quick thank you for your comments and advice on my Smoke Ring and especially from Susan for taking the trouble to reply. In fact I have undone it and I think I shall reknit it as a short wide scarf because I think it's just my head it doesn't suit and I really love the pattern I'm thinking using the Qiviut for it. What do you think?

Wishing you all a Very Happy and Healthy 2008.

Happy New Year, Kathryn! I hope everything improves with your health situation. I wandered over to your site from the nice comment you left me, and I'm so happy I did. The Lily of the Valley Smoke Ring looked lovely to me... I would have kept it.

Oh poor you again, Kathryn, with your eye problems. I suppose you must have felt that it couldn't get any worse, esp at Christmas?

Anyway, I really do hope things improve, and you get to knit something soon from Heartfelt! I got it as a present too and I'm itching to cast on about 5 things atm!

Your eye problems sound nasty. HOpe they've sorted it properly. I flicked through the book you mentioned in a knitting shop today. It looks gorgeous.

A Happy New Year to you too Kathryn, and all my very best wishes to you regarding your eye.

I do hope you are happier with your Smoke Ring which is lovely, and looking forward to seeing Marguerite, which is a pattern I am very fond of - I have plans for a second one myself.
